A Rome photoshoot session with me runs from 1 hour to 3 hours depending on the package you choose, and you will walk between 3 and 5 kilometres across the city. That distance is not random. It reflects the real spacing between Rome's landmark locations, the time needed to shoot properly at each one, and the rhythm that produces the best images.

This guide covers every session length, what you actually do with that time, how far each package asks you to walk, what the streets underfoot feel like, and how to choose the right duration for your trip. Whether you have one free afternoon or a full morning blocked off, this will help you plan accurately.

SESSION LENGTHS

What Are the Three Session Options and How Long Does Each Run?

There are three standard session lengths: 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours. The Essential session is 1 hour at one location, producing 30 finished photos. The Signature session is 2 hours across two locations, producing 50 finished photos. The Prestige session is 3 hours across three locations, producing 60 finished photos. A Proposal session also runs 1 hour and uses a hidden-camera setup. Night sessions are their own category and do not follow the same daylight location logic.

One hour is enough for a focused shoot at a single landmark, timed well around light conditions. Two hours allows for a meaningful change of scene, covering two complementary locations without feeling rushed. Three hours is the format for people who want clear visual variety, three distinct Rome backdrops, and the time to settle into each one. Each session includes all the transit time and posing direction, so nothing beyond the session duration is required from you.

WALKING DISTANCE

How Far Will You Actually Walk During a Rome Photoshoot?

Across a full session you will walk between 3 and 5 kilometres. For a 1-hour session at one location, the walking is mostly within and immediately around that site. For a 2-hour or 3-hour session, the distance between locations adds up quickly. As a reference, the distance from the Colosseum to the Vatican Museums alone is close to 4 kilometres. Even within the historic centre, which UNESCO lists as a World Heritage Site covering nearly 20 square kilometres, the spread between landmarks is real. The area between the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain is the most walkable cluster, where major landmarks sit within roughly 20 minutes of each other on foot.

For multi-location sessions, I plan routes that keep transit efficient. Adjacent locations are grouped where the light and timing make sense. For example, the Trevi Fountain to the Spanish Steps is roughly a 10-minute walk, while the Spanish Steps to the Colosseum is closer to 25 to 30 minutes on foot. The 3 to 5 kilometre figure is the real-world result of those connections, not an estimate. Think of it as a good long walk through one of the world's most visually dense cities, photographed the entire way.

3-5 km per session
Trevi to Spanish Steps
~10 min on foot
Spanish Steps to Colosseum
~25-30 min on foot

TipWear flat, cushioned shoes. The cobblestone streets, known as sampietrini, are uneven and hard on your feet over several kilometres.

STREET CONDITIONS

Rome's Cobblestones: What the Ground Is Actually Like

Most of the walking during a session crosses Rome's characteristic sampietrini cobblestones, the dark volcanic-basalt blocks that pave the streets and piazzas of the historic centre. According to Wanted in Rome, the stones are "neither ideal for pushing strollers over, or walking across in high heels." They are uneven, the surface shifts slightly underfoot, and when wet they become slippery. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to come prepared.

Flat-soled shoes with grip are the practical answer. Avoid stilettos, open-toe sandals with no grip, or new shoes you have not broken in. Trastevere, the Colosseum area, and the lanes around Piazza Navona are all cobblestoned, and those are among the best shooting locations in the city. The texture of the stones also reads beautifully in photos, giving Rome street scenes their particular depth and grain. Walking on them is part of what the city looks and feels like.

TipIf wet weather is expected, the cobblestones become genuinely slippery. Lace-up shoes with a rubber sole are the safest and most comfortable choice.

PACING AND RHYTHM

How the Time Inside a Session Is Actually Spent

A session is not a sprint between monuments. The majority of the time at each location is spent shooting, not walking. I direct, adjust positioning, work different angles within the same space, and move around the same subject rather than racing to the next backdrop. Within a single location there is more ground covered than people expect, because getting a clean frame at a busy landmark sometimes means walking 50 metres to a side angle or descending a level to lose the crowd.

"I spend the first few minutes of every location finding the light and the frame before a single shot is taken," Finzi says. "Those minutes look like we're just walking. They're actually where the session is won or lost." Transit between locations in a multi-location session is brisk but unhurried. It is not down time. You decompress, I scout the next entry point, and we arrive at the second location already oriented.

Choosing the Right Duration for Your Trip

If you have a limited window, say a single afternoon or a very early morning before other plans, the 1-hour Essential session at one well-chosen location is a complete experience. You get 30 finished photos from a focused, properly lit shoot. It does not feel abbreviated. One hour with full attention at the right spot is genuinely enough for many clients.

If you want two clearly different visual settings, the 2-hour Signature session is the most popular choice for a reason. Two locations cover two different faces of Rome, the ancient and the baroque, the neighbourhood and the landmark, and 50 photos gives real variety. The 3-hour Prestige session is for people who want maximum coverage, three locations, and the kind of set that stands on its own as a visual record of a Rome trip rather than a single memory. It requires stamina, good shoes, and a relaxed morning or afternoon.

PHYSICAL PREP

What to Wear on Your Feet and How to Prepare Your Body

The most common complaint from clients who are not prepared for a Rome photoshoot is sore feet by the end of the second hour. The route is a real walk across ancient uneven surfaces, not a stroll on smooth pavement. Flat shoes with a cushioned sole, broken in before the session, are the standard recommendation. Leather-soled shoes and heeled footwear of any kind will be uncomfortable across the sampietrini and may affect how freely you move, which shows in the photos.

Beyond footwear, staying hydrated matters. If your session is in summer or at midday, the heat compounds the physical effort of walking several kilometres. Bring water. Do not schedule a heavy lunch immediately before a 2 or 3 hour session. Arrive rested. These are not dramatic requirements. They are the difference between a session where you feel good and one where you are visibly tired by the third location.

TipPack a small bag or leave it at the hotel. Carrying a heavy backpack for 3 to 5 km affects your posture and shows in every frame.

LOCATION CLUSTERS

Which Locations Group Naturally Into a Multi-Stop Session?

Rome's historic centre holds the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, Campo de' Fiori, and dozens of other landmarks in a compact, walkable zone. That cluster is ideal for grouping two or three session locations without long transit times. The Colosseum and the Roman Forum sit immediately adjacent, so covering both in a session requires minimal walking between them. Trastevere is a short taxi or walking connection from the Forum area and provides a completely different visual atmosphere.

Locations that are farther apart, like the Vatican and the Colosseum, sit close to 4 kilometres from each other and are best treated as separate session anchors. In a 3-hour Prestige session I route across the city in a logical arc rather than doubling back. I shoot at over 30 locations across Rome and the routing between them is something I have refined across hundreds of sessions. You do not need to plan it. You need to show up, wear the right shoes, and be ready to walk.

Match Your Session

Quick answers to the questions visitors ask before they book.

How long is the shortest session?
One hour. That covers one location and delivers 30 finished photos.
How far will I walk in a 1-hour session?
Mostly within and immediately around a single location. Minimal transit walking.
How far will I walk in a 2-hour session?
Roughly 3 to 5 km total, including the walk between the two locations and movement within each.
How far is it between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps?
About 10 minutes on foot. They pair well in a 2-location session.
Can I wear heels during the session?
The cobblestone streets across most of Rome's historic centre make heels uncomfortable and sometimes risky. Flat shoes with grip are strongly recommended.
Do I need to arrange transport between locations?
No. I plan the routing. Transit time is built into the session duration.
What if I am not physically able to walk 5 km?
Tell me when booking. I can design a session around a single compact location or nearby cluster to keep walking to a minimum.
When will I get my photos after the session?
Within 24 hours.
Can I reschedule if I am too tired or unwell on the day?
Yes. Rescheduling is free and available anytime, with no time limit.
Which session is most popular?
The Signature. Two hours, two locations, 50 photos at €500.
