Session length, packages, snacks, strollers and rain plans for families with under-fives
The simplest family photoshoot in Rome with a toddler is one hour, at one location, timed to your child's best part of the day, with a stroller, water, snacks and a spare outfit in the bag. For most families with children under five, that means the Essential session, with Signature as the step up if your child is happy to keep moving.
This guide is for parents planning around naps, meals and short attention spans. It covers how long to book, which package fits, how to time the day, where to take a break, what to pack, and what happens if your child has a rough morning. Pick a session. Choose a date. I handle the rest.
One hour is the right length for most toddlers and babies. That is the Essential session: 1 hour, 30 photos, 1 location, €300. A child's good mood is the limiting factor, not the light and not the backdrop, so a shorter session at a single spot usually produces more usable photos than a long route.
Every session includes some walking, about 3-5 km in total, so the plan needs to account for small legs. Bring the stroller or a carrier for the stretches between photo spots. Sitting a tired child in the stroller for a few minutes between setups is normal and keeps the next round of photos relaxed.
"I start with the child, not the backdrop," Finzi says. "If the little one is comfortable, the whole family relaxes, and that is what shows in the images."
TipTell me your child's age and usual routine when you book, so we can plan around the hours they are at their best.
| Package | Price | Duration | Photos | Locations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | €300 | 1 hour | 30 photos | 1 location |
| Signature | €500 | 2 hours | 50 photos | 2 locations |
| Prestige | €800 | 3 hours | 60 photos | 3 locations |
Essential suits babies, toddlers and any family that wants a short, low-pressure session. Signature suits families with a child who handles a walk and a change of scenery: 2 hours, 50 photos, 2 locations, €500, and it is the Most Popular package. Prestige is 3 hours, 60 photos and 3 locations for €800, and it makes more sense for older children than for a toddler.
The practical difference is the number of moves. Each new location means packing up, walking or travelling, and starting again with a child who may have just settled. Two locations work well if the second is a park where your child can run. Three locations in one outing is a long day for under-fives.
I recommend booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (April to October). Last-minute bookings are sometimes possible, so contact me directly to check availability. A €30 deposit secures your date.
TipIf you are unsure between Essential and Signature, pick the one that matches how long your child will realistically stay cheerful.
Sunrise and the hour before sunset (golden hour) give the softest, most flattering light. For a family with a toddler, choose whichever of the two matches your child's best window. A child who wakes early and cheerful suits a sunrise session. A child who needs a long afternoon nap suits the hour before sunset. Avoid booking across a nap or a mealtime, because a hungry or sleepy child cannot be coaxed through it.
The season changes the answer. In summer, heat and crowds build through the day, so earlier is easier on small children. From autumn into winter, sunset arrives in the late afternoon, so golden hour comes well before dinner and bedtime, which suits families with an early-to-bed child. Night sessions for the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, beautifully lit, are a Night Session at €450, but they run into most toddlers' bedtime, so they work better for school-age children.
Feed your child before we meet, not on the way to the first photo spot. Sticky hands, crumbs and a snack in progress do not mix well with a clean outfit.
TipPlan the session so your child has eaten and napped before it starts, not after.
Villa Borghese is the easiest place in central Rome to let a child run and then take photos on the same visit.Turismo Roma, the official Roma Capitale tourism site, describes it as the fourth-largest public park in the city, at approximately 80 hectares, with wide tree-lined avenues. It lists the Casina di Raffaello as "a playroom for children and teenagers aged 3 to 14", which makes it a good stop for older siblings, while toddlers under three will be happier on the lawns and the playground.
The park itself is free to enter. Open lawns, shade and benches give a toddler room to move, and a kiosk near Piazzale delle Canestre sells light meals and gelato. Bike, rickshaw and golf cart rental points sit around the park, and several are near the main playground. They are fun for a family break, but check that your child can sit independently on open-sided seats before renting.
"I shoot at Villa Borghese a lot with young families because the child can burn off energy first," Finzi says. "After ten minutes on the grass, the photos come easily." From the park we can also walk to the Pincio terrace for a change of backdrop, which suits a Signature session.
TipBring a blanket. A picnic on the grass between photo setups resets a toddler faster than anything else.
Pack for a child who will be tired, thirsty and possibly messy. The checklist: a stroller or carrier, a water bottle, a snack that does not stain, wipes, a spare outfit, a hat or light layer for the weather, and one favourite toy or book for the waiting moments. Keep the bag small, because you will be carrying it for the 3-5 km walk.
Water is easy to find. Rome's free drinking fountains, called nasoni, are described by Turismo Roma as providing free drinking water, and they are found across the centre and in the parks. Acea, the municipal water utility, also runs a free Waidy Wow app that maps water points. Do not let a toddler drink from monument fountains such as Trevi or those in Piazza Navona, which are decorative basins and not drinking taps. Look for the cylindrical nasoni, and any sign marked acqua non potabile means do not drink.
Paving in the historic centre is uneven in many places, so choose comfortable, flat shoes for the adults and anything with grip for a walking toddler. A stroller with decent wheels handles it better than a light travel frame.
TipRefill bottles at a nasone before we meet, so nobody has to hunt for water mid-session.
Rescheduling is free and available anytime, so a sick or exhausted child never costs you the session. Contact me directly and we will find another date. The €30 deposit is non-refundable and locks your date, so book a date with some flexibility in your trip rather than the last day before your flight.
A meltdown during the session is normal, and it is not the end of it. We stop, you feed or cuddle your child, and we continue when they are ready. Light rain actually creates dramatic skies and intimate moods, and I work in most weather conditions. A wet day with a hooded raincoat and a small umbrella can produce some of the best family photos. Heavy storms trigger a free postponement within 48 hours.
"I never push a toddler through a bad patch," Finzi says. "Ten calm minutes later, you get the smile that makes the album."
TipBuild one spare day into your Rome itinerary for the session, if you can.
Choose clothes your child can move in. Soft fabrics, a coordinated palette instead of matching outfits, and shoes that are already worn in are better than a new stiff outfit. A change of clothes in the bag covers spills, and a favourite item, such as a hat or a small toy, helps if your child is shy with a stranger.
Let the photos come from play. My style is clean, modern, and centred on real connection. I work alone, so there is no crowd of assistants for a toddler to be wary of. Games, tickles, walking hand in hand and carrying your child on your hip all photograph better than lining everyone up and asking for a smile.
I edit every image myself and deliver within 24 hours, which means you see the photos while you are still in Rome.
TipSkip the stiff new outfit. Clothes your child already moves in easily photograph better.
Click any Book Now button on the site to choose your session type, select a package, and pick your preferred date. I will confirm availability immediately. A €30 deposit secures your date. I shoot at over 30 locations across Rome, including the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican, Roman Forum, Piazza Navona, Villa Borghese, Trastevere, Spanish Steps, and more.
When you book, mention the ages of your children, your preferred time of day, and whether you will bring a stroller. That is enough for me to suggest a location and a pace that suit the family. I speak English.
